Tragic America
So this article in The New York Review Of Books isn’t about political theatre per se, but Daniel Mendelsohn does examine the relationship between recent history and how we process that history through art. In scintillating fashion, he links Aescylus’ Persians to the recent 9/11 films World Trade Center and United 93 and meditates on the nature of tragedy, the current pieties surrounding depicitions of ‘reality’ and why great art causes you “to situate your feelings in a vaster frame”.
